Alexey, I think that I have a basic version of latex, with nothing special, and it works for me.

Actually, I'm not sure how I can check which version I have. No need to check the version. Works for you? I have read TeXbook written by Donald Knuth, and was surprised to see the new macro. I started to look for more details on the Internet. I found that there is expansion of TeX. Aniko Aniko Aniko, thanks for your answer.Since LaTeX offers a large amount of features, it's hard to remember all commands. Even though commands follow a logical naming scheme, you will probably need a table for the most common math symbols at some point.

You can play around with the commands shown here in the sandbox below and insert your equation into your LaTeX document. I don't want to provide a complete list of LaTeX symbols on this website. The ctan already provides a huge list with currently symbols, which you can download here.

Instead I'm trying to limit this list to the most common math symbols and commands. If you think I forgot some very important basic function or symbol here, please let me know. The symbols for trigonometric functions have a very straightforward naming scheme. LaTeX offers math symbols for various kinds of integrals out of the box. Of course LaTeX is able to typeset matrices as well. For this purpose LaTeX offers the following environments. Make sure that the number of ampersands is the same for every row.

You can try all the LaTeX symbols in the sandbox below. Play around with the commands, make your own formulas and copy the code to your document. This five-part series of articles uses a combination of video and textual descriptions to teach the basics of creating LaTeX graphics using TikZ.

These tutorials were first published on the original ShareLateX blog site during August ; consequently, today's editor interface Overleaf has changed considerably due to the development of ShareLaTeX and the subsequent merger of ShareLaTeX and Overleaf. However, much of the content is still relevant and teaches you some basic LaTeX—skills and expertise that will apply across all platforms.

TikZ is a LaTeX package that allows you to create high quality diagrams—and often quite complex ones too. In this first post we'll start with the basics, showing how to draw simple shapes, with subsequent posts introducing some of the interesting things you can do using the tikz package.

Now whenever we want to create a TikZ diagram we need to use the tikzpicture environment. To draw a straight line we use this command, then we enter a starting co-ordinate, followed by two dashes before the ending co-ordinate.

We then finish the statement by closing it with a semicolon. However this isn't particularly good style. As we are drawing a line that ends up in the same place we started, it is better to finish the statement with the keyword cycle rather than the last co-ordinate. To simplify this code further we can use the rectangle keyword after the starting co-ordinate and then follow it with the co-ordinate of the corner diagonally opposite.

To add a curved line we use control points. We begin with our starting co-ordinate, then use two dots followed by the keyword controls and then the co-ordinates of our control points separated by an and.

Then after two more dots we have the final point. These control points act like magnets attracting the line in their direction:. We can then add a circle like this. The first co-ordinate is the circle's centre and the length in brackets at the end is the circle's radius:.

This is how we draw an ellipse.

LaTeX Graphics using TikZ: A Tutorial for Beginners (Part 1)—Basic Drawing

This time the lengths in the brackets separated by an andare the x-direction radius and the y-direction radius respectively:. This is how we draw an arc.

In the final bracket we enter the starting angle, the ending angle and the radius. This time they are separated by colons:. For example, we can edit the circle we drew so that the line is red, thick and dashed:. Very often when drawing diagrams we will want to draw a grid. We've also specified the colour gray and told it to make the lines very thin.

After these arguments we enter the co-ordinates of the bottom-left corner, followed by the keyword grid and then the co-ordinates of the top right-corner:. Now lets add a shape onto our grid and colour it in. Then in square brackets we enter a colour. Then we just specify a closed shape as we would normally:. Then in the square brackets we specify a left colour and a right colour:.

Let's finish this post by adding some labeled axes to our grid. To do this we draw two normal lines both from 0,0but we'll make them thick and add arrowheads using a dash and a pointed bracket:. We can also label our axes using nodes. Every node we create in TikZ has a number of anchors.

So when we specify the north west anchor for the x-axis node, we are telling TikZ to use the anchor in the top-left-hand corner to anchor the node to the co-ordinate:. This clever piece of code uses two for each loops to systematically go along the axes adding the ticks and numbers.

This concludes our discussion on basic drawing in TikZ.Just want to say that I am really grateful for Overleaf, it has enabled a slew of research and teaching development in my work that would have been annoyingly difficult before.

Overleaf comes with a complete, ready to go LaTeX environment which runs on our servers. With Overleaf you get the same LaTeX set-up wherever you go.

By working with your colleagues and students on Overleaf, you know that you're not going to hit any version inconsistencies or package conflicts. We support almost all LaTeX features, including inserting images, bibliographies, equations, and much more! Read about all the exciting things you can do with Overleaf in our LaTeX guides.

Overleaf makes sure that you're always up to date with your collaborators and what they are doing. There is only a single master version of each document which everyone has access to. It's impossible to make conflicting changes, and you don't have to wait for your colleagues to send you the latest draft before you can keep working.

If multiple people want to work on a document at the same time then that's no problem. You can see where your colleagues are typing directly in the editor and their changes show up on your screen immediately.

Overleaf is so easy to get started with that you'll be able to invite your non-LaTeX colleagues to contribute directly to your LaTeX documents. They'll be productive from day one and be able to pick up small amounts of LaTeX as they go. Overleaf includes a history of all of your changes so you can see exactly who changed what, and when. This makes it extremely easy to keep up to date with any progress made by your collaborators and allows you to review recent work.

In a collaboration or on your own, sometimes mistakes are made. Reverting back to previous versions is simple and removes the risk of losing work or regretting a change.

Interesting idea, but also I'm just curious why would you write a fraction this way? I spend so much time in classes trying to get the students not to use a slanted lines for fractions 'cause it inevitably leads to all sorts of mistakes.

The fact that he succeeded was most probably why TeX and later on, LaTeX became so popular within the scientific community. Typesetting mathematics is one of LaTeX's greatest strengths.

It is also a large topic due to the existence of so much mathematical notation. If your document requires only a few simple mathematical formulas, plain LaTeX has most of the tools that you will need. If you are writing a scientific document that contains numerous complicated formulas, the amsmath package [1] introduces several new commands that are more powerful and flexible than the ones provided by basic LaTeX.

The mathtools package fixes some amsmath quirks and adds some useful settings, symbols, and environments to amsmath. LaTeX needs to know when text is mathematical.

This is because LaTeX typesets maths notation differently from normal text. Therefore, special environments have been declared for this purpose. They can be distinguished into two categories depending on how they are presented:.

As math requires special environments, there are naturally the appropriate environment names you can use in the standard way. Unlike most other environments, however, there are some handy shorthands to declaring your formulas. The following table summarizes them:.

Furthermore, should a problem occur, the error messages may not be helpful. If you are typing text normally, you are said to be in text modebut while you are typing within one of those mathematical environments, you are said to be in math modethat has some differences compared to the text mode :. Doing so might cause the line to be taller, but will cause exponents and indices to be displayed correctly for some math operators.

Mathematics has many symbols! There is a set of symbols that can be accessed directly from the keyboard:. Beyond those listed above, distinct commands must be issued in order to display the desired symbols. There are many examples such as Greek letters, set and relations symbols, arrows, binary operators, etc. Fortunately, there's a tool that can greatly simplify the search for the command for a specific symbol.

Look for "Detexify" in the external links section below. Greek letters are commonly used in mathematics, and they are very easy to type in math mode. You just have to type the name of the letter after a backslash: if the first letter is lowercase, you will get a lowercase Greek letter, if the first letter is uppercase and only the first letterthen you will get an uppercase letter.

Lowercase epsilon, theta, kappa, phi, pi, rho, and sigma are provided in two different versions. The alternate, or var iant, version is created by adding "var" before the name of the letter:. Scroll down to List of mathematical symbols for a complete list of Greek symbols. An operator is a function that is written as a word: e.

LaTeX has many of these defined as commands:. For certain operators such as limitsthe subscript is placed underneath the operator:. To use operators that are not pre-defined, such as argmaxsee custom operators. Powers and indices are equivalent to superscripts and subscripts in normal text mode.
