People travelling on the A1 M through Yorkshire could be left with a eight-mile diversion for two consecutive weekends as the motorway will be completely closed near Doncaster. The northbound stretch of the A1 M will be completely closed between junction 35 and junction 37 for more than 48 hours over the next two weekends as vital construction works enter a crucial phase. The works began in April and are expected to last seven months.

The northbound stretch of the motorway will be closed from 10pm on Friday, June 12 until 6am on Monday, June Commuters will be diverted off at junction 35 and taken through Doncaster before rejoining the A1 M at junction Throughout the duration of the roadworks, drivers have been limited to 40mph, with speed cameras installed on the five-mile stretch of the A1 M in South Yorkshire. There has already been a full weekend closure at the end of Maywith five more major closures set to disrupt commuters in the weeks ahead.

It was designated by the Ministry of Transport inand for much of its route it followed various branches of the historic Great North Roadthe main deviation being between Boroughbridge and Darlington. The course of the A1 has changed where towns or villages have been bypassedand where new alignments have taken a slightly different route. Several sections of the route have been upgraded to motorway standard and designated A1 M. The A1 is the latest in a series of routes north from London to York and beyond.
It was designated in by the Ministry of Transport under the Great Britain road numbering scheme. Bypasses were built around Barnet and Hatfield inbut it was not until c.
Baldock was bypassed in July During the early s plans to widen the A1 along Archway Road in London were abandoned after considerable opposition and four public inquiries during which road protesters disrupted proceedings.
A proposal to upgrade the whole of the A1 to motorway status was investigated by the government in  but was dropped inalong with many other schemes, in response to road protests against other road schemes including the Newbury Bypass and the M3 extension through Twyford Down. The inns on the road, many of which still survive, were staging posts on the coach routes, providing accommodation, stabling for the horses and replacement mounts.

Most of the English section of the A1 is a series of alternating sections of primary route, dual carriageway and motorway. From Newcastle upon Tyne to Edinburgh it is a trunk road with alternating sections of dual and single carriageway.
The table below summarises the road as motorway and non-motorway sections. A number of sections between Newcastle and Edinburgh were dualled between andincluding a 1. Plans to dual the single carriageway section of road north of Newcastle upon Tyne were shelved in as they were not considered a regional priority by central government.
The intention was to dual the road between Morpeth and Felton and between Adderstone and Belford. Between August and September six roundabouts on the A1 and the A1 M to Alconbury were replaced with grade-separated junctions. Upgrading the 6.The A1 is the longest numbered road in the UK. It spans over miles in length and stretches from London to Edinburgh. It was designed by the Ministry of Transport in and over decades the route has been modified with parts given motorway status A1M.
For centuries it was the only major route to get from London to York. The most southern part of the A1 starts in Aldersgate in London and heads north passing through the capital to Borehamwood. The A1 is the most recent route to head north out of London, passing through York and beyond.
There are lots of towns and cities that are easily accessible via the A1, such as Peterborough, Doncaster, Leeds, York and Darlington. The A1 then edges north towards the coast to Newcastle upon Tyne and Berwick-upon-Tweed before finishing in the Scottish capital. It becomes a motorway until the road reaches Peterborough where it stays a major dual carriageway until Wadworth in Doncaster. The road will be restricted to two lanes until it reaches its end in Edinburgh. Throughout the route of the A1 and A1 M there are several junctions to be mindful of when planning your journey.

Stuck between two sections of the A1 Mexpect traffic to build up on this busy junction. You can also expect delays just before this junction at the Washington services to Lobley Hill in Gateshead, which is about a six-mile stretch. This section gets particularly congested with speeds averaging just 30 mph during peak hours. This can be problematic due to the road markings not being consistent - making navigation around the roundabout unclear.
The Black Cat Roundabout in Bedfordshire is a well known accident blackspot. This is due to the road being a popular truck route flowing from Bedford via the A and joining the A1 at this small interchange. The A1 old road in the East of England, near Peterborough, is heavily subjected to gap junctions. Be aware of the potential eventuality of cars crossing your pathway or slowing down to veer into the short junctions.
The mile stretch between Northallerton and Darlington in North Yorkshire is a key route in northern England.
